Farm Updates
As we welcome the sunshine this week, we’re excited to bring you an impressive line-up. Headlining—broccoli heads! This crop is not easy to cultivate, but with each season, our trials have yielded more consistent results. This week, we anticipate a good harvest as we cut many of the main crowns. After that, we’ll see how many secondary shoots we can gather.
In addition, we’re returning to our cabbages, which will be around for several weeks, in some variety... We’ll begin with our green head cabbages and later transition to the more textured, wavy-leafed Savoys. The favorable weather has allowed us to plant another batch of salad greens, as the fields are dry enough for seeding. We will also start moving in on our sweet potatoes later this week, sadly we do expect to see a smaller-sized potato this year.
The drought earlier this year impacted our larger fields, it has been hard to process but we did foresee the challenge as we can only water a certain amount of space. This impact was seen especially for crops like potatoes and squash, both summer and winter varieties. This pressed us to prioritize watering the crops that you can’t easily find elsewhere and that we could keep drip lines going on, for weeks at a time on a consistent rotation. Like our bountiful specialty greens plus those roots and our key summer crops.
Many other farms faced similar challenges this season we learned, making the hunt for wholesale a little bit tricky. However, we’ve managed to secure some extra sweet potatoes to supplement our haul, from an amazing organic farm called Sassafras Creek Farm, located in Leonardtown, MD. We also have collaborated with another larger neighboring farm in Clinton, MD to help supplement what we couldn’t grow in winter squash from Miller Farms! Stay tuned for updates as we work now get everything in one place soon here at the farm.
This situation highlights the importance of community as a key component of resiliency. Climate change is affecting us all, and we’re seeing its extremes play out just south of us with the impacts of Hurricane Helene and the approaching Hurricane Milton. Now more than ever, it’s clear that we need to lean on each other.
But while this season’s weather had its impacts in big ways, we still have seen a great deal of success in our fields, as this week we are bringing you yet another week of ripe tomatoes.
Keep the shares coming through the Winter Season!
