Farm Updates
Welcome back!
It seems June has passed us by for the 2024 season, bringing barely any rain. It has been a tough challenge keeping up with irrigation and managing other tasks that seem much harder in this heat and dry soil. We're all eagerly awaiting a good summer rain shower or three.
Despite the drought, we managed to check some big items off our to-do list during the break. You may notice some fields have transformed. As we have lightly tilled the spring fields that have finished their season to prepare for summer cover crops and new fall greens fields. And our second wave of tomatoes has been mulched, and posts are going up with twine.
Quite a few crops like the eggplant and peppers, are thriving on their irrigation schedule. You will see as you drive along that most crops are receiving water regularly through our black drip lines that we run alongside crops to drip water more efficiently.
We are enjoying the high tunnel tomatoes, as they continue to produce abundantly. They also seem like they are overlapping nicely with our field tomatoes, which should start ripening soon.
But the potatoes will need more time to grow due to the lack of rain, so we'll let them size up for about another two weeks before revisiting them.
In this drought, our usual spot for sunflowers turned into a deer buffet, as sunflower sprouts being watered regularly are quite tasty. We'll be reseeding them and planning for a Fall debut inside our new deer fence. Maybe with more winter squash that they also are starting in on next. We will be putting an electric fence here to see if we can send the message that some crops are just off limits. Stay tuned.
Despite the challenges the weather is bringing us…and the deer, the farm is still producing a tremendous amount of food and we look forward to keep sharing that with you all for the remainder of the season!
