We are in for a big pile of snow, and I hope everyone is feeling prepared and ready to bundle up to come get your veggies! The pick-up will be on for the usual time, 1-3pm on Saturday, as the snowfall should not be starting until the middle of the night Saturday. We will be monitoring the weather in case the storm starts earlier, in which case we will let you know if we need to cancel or alter the pick-up hours. Note: There will be NO pre-boxed shares this week. We will not be able to guarantee plowed roads on the farm for the next week, so please do not request a boxed share. You can collect your veggies at the usual time, Saturday 1-3pm, or use the share request form to get a double next time.

“Stella Rossa” radicchio has tender green-red-brown leaves, crunchy white stems, and a bright pink core.

A couple of fun things are hitting the table this week! First is radicchio. There are a ton of varieties beyond the classic circular dark red radicchio with white stems that you probably have seen in bagged salad mixes. Stella Rossa’s light bitterness adds depth and flavor to a salad, and goes well with salty or fatty ingredients like nuts and crumbly cheeses. It is gorgeous in a salad with the arugula, red cabbage, or kohlrabi in the share this week, and the addition of sweet orange slices, feta cheese, and pecans is a farmer-favorite. Even if you are pretty sure you don’t love bitter greens or weird salads, we hope you’ll give this one-time item a try.

Second, the rutabagas are tasty and versatile, like a purple-top turnip in every way, except they are much sweeter. It is great mashed with potatoes, added to hearty soups, or tossed on a sheet pan roast with rosemary and other veggies. There is a really fun recipe below for “swede” (which is what they call a rutabaga in Ireland) baked like a ham. I recommend peeling the tough skin with a knife, though it’s not absolutely necessary.

Also, this will be the last brussels sprouts of the winter season, so enjoy their brief deliciousness!
