Farm Updates
August is moving by quickly and the fall air seems to be moving in more and more each morning. But there are still signs of summer all around the farm. The last round of cucumbers has arrived right on time, with the smaller pickling cukes and larger slicing varieties making their appearance. We're also happy to report that fresh ginger is sticking around, adding some zest to our shares this week.
We’re gearing up for the final batch of field tomatoes. However, they seem to need another week to fully ripen, so we’ll be pulling what we can from our last set—expect a smaller share of larger tomatoes this week. The cherry tomatoes, however, will help fill the gap until the larger ones come on more strongly.
The tomato plants are looking healthy and upright, with plenty of green fruits still clinging to the vines. It’s great to see this summer staple hanging on a bit longer—kudos to the crew for carefully managing the twining right through to the end.
In our region, it’s increasingly challenging to fend off diseases in tomatoes, as they love to vine out but struggle when their vines are wet. Proper management and training of these plants upward give this summer icon a fighting chance through this last stretch, which coincides with hurricane season. Other favorites like peppers, eggplant, onions, and okra are also thriving, and we expect them to keep coming in throughout September.
With most of the summer tasks behind us, our focus—aside from harvesting—has shifted to preparing for fall. We’ve been busy planting and weeding fall crops, along with tackling tasks like getting cover cropping ready to phase out summer fields, and overall preparing for the winter season. So far, fall is shaping up nicely, with the occasional rain helping our transplants and root crops along.
So here’s to keeping summer going just a bit longer, and making way for one of our favorite times of year with the greens starting to overlap just a bit more than we saw in the spring-to-summer transition.
