Week 3 of 26: What is this weather?

Let’s go little lettuce!

Pick-up times are:

Wednesday: 3-6 p.m. On Farm
Thursday: 4-6 p.m. Phillip Merrill Center in Annapolis
Saturday: 1-4 p.m. On Farm

This Week’s Share:

Mixed Lettuce Heads
Green Garlic or Scallions
Hakurei Turnips
Salad Greens
Cucumbers
Bok Choi
Seedlings

Check the recipe above for a genuinely easy bok choi side dish that still comes out like a restaurant made it. The secret is the cornstarch, which thickens the sauce and makes it glossy and sticky. Yum! Don’t skip the oyster sauce (we are the Chesapeake Bay Foundation Farm after all!)

Farm Notes:

I’m keeping this one short and sweet. It is hot outside! The greenhouses are boiling, thank goodness the tunnels get a good cross breeze, and the whole farm team is downing popsicles, gatorade, and iced drinks like it’s July. But it is mid-May and these wild temperature swings up and back down are very disruptive to the flow of work. Luckily we still got in good time cultivating, discing, and spading various fields to keep the weeds down and prepare for seeding ahead of the whopping rain later this week. 2.5 inches over 3 days is not ideal for the plants, but the silver lining is that it will certainly germinate our just-seeded sunflowers, okra, and third round of cucumbers, plus summer cover crop to boot. I often say that a half inch of rain every single Saturday night all summer long would work perfectly for me. That’s not what we’re getting this week but we trundle along and make things work anyway. They may be hard to see, but the field pictured here is full of 8 inch tall cherry tomatoes and tomatillo plants on their way to growing up! More notes from the field next week. For this week, enjoy your salads in the shade or under an umbrella!

Last call:

If you are on the fence about ordering bulk beef tomorrow is your last chance until the fall! Four of our rotationally grazed, grass-finished Red Angus cows are heading to the butcher and we have a few more bulk spots available in 25, 50, or 100 pound boxes. Buying in bulk gets you a DEAL. In the 100 pound box you spend $10/pound for everything, including the premium steaks, so save money and order from the Farm Store today.
